Freeware password recovery tools lineup

Over the years (wearing my IT hat) I needed to recover various forgotten passwords for different people, so I started a list of tools that could be used to do some of these tasks. I will be adding to the list and updating this post as I stumble upon such tools.

Windows Password Recovery Tools

Offline NT Password & Registry Editor (Bootdisk/CD) is a bootable disk to help you reset a windows logon password to any local user account and can help unlocking a locked account. You need to reboot your system in order to use it and boot from the provided CD image. It works somewhat like ERD Commander’s password change tool.

LCP – User account auditing and password recovery. Supports dictionary, brute-force and hybrid attacks. Very nice program similar to @stake’s tool L0phtCrack, but free.

ophcrack – It is a windows password cracker based on rainbow tables. It is an extremely fast processing, even though it may not find the password and I had a hard time to make it work, while installed locally. They also provide a bootable cd, which is easier to work with…

Office Password Recovery Tools

Shatterock Database Password Sleuth – Helps you to recover passwords from Microsoft Access Databases 95-2002 (.mdb).

Word/Excel Password Recovery Wizard – This seems to be a nice one for recovering Word and Excel passwords.

BIOS Password Recovery Tools

BIOS Central provides some utilities allowing you to reveal BIOS passwords. Most of those are kind of complicated to use or DOS based, but I have not found any others…

Multifunctional Password Recovery Tools

Cain - CrackerCain & Abel is a comprehensive windows password recovery and analysis tool. It allows decoding stored password from several windows utilities (like CISCO VPN Client profiles, RDP stored passwords, etc.). Cain - SnifferCain also contains a network sniffer for a variety of protocols (HTTP, FTP, SMTP, POP3, IMAP, SMB, ICQ, TDS and others), allowing recovering network services passwords. The Password cracker can help you decode variety of hashes as well. It has many other features like recording VOIP conversations, revealing password boxes, cracking encrypted passwords using brute-force, dictionary attacks, etc.

Overall it is an easy to use software to help network administrators improve security.

Easy mp3 manipulation with mp3DirectCut

mp3DirectCutmp3DirectCut is a small and easy to use program can help you edit your mp3s. If you need to normalize the volume, change it, add fade effect, or detect pauses this is a very useful utility to have. You can also cut, paste and delete sections.

The manipulations are very fast and non-destructive. The nicest thing is that nothing is re-encoded, so you don’t loose quality. For the geeks there is also command line interface provided.

Very nice tool to have and strongly recommended!

View and Edit Image Metadata with PhotoME

PhotoMEViewing and manipulating image metadata has some challenges and I’ve been looking for a while for a software to do it nicely and intuitively. The solution I have found is PhotoME. Even though still in beta, the program behaves very stable.

PhotoME has a very functional and easy to use user interface. Here are the most important features:

  • View and Edit EXIF metadata (2.21 specification);
  • Support for IPTC;
  • Reads and displays embedded ICC profiles;
  • Support for many formats including RAW formats;
  • Support for Maker Notes tags for most major camera manufacturers;
  • Import and Export metadata;
  • Explorer, IE and Firefox integration;

Overall a very useful utility if you work with images.

Launch programs faster with Executor

Executor is a very useful replacement of the standard windows “Run” dialog (Start->Run). That is the way the standard Run command should have been done. It offers many customization settings and it is skinnable.

You can define your own keywords, to start applications, etc. Executor features keywords autocomplete, history, and many others. Very cool feature is that you can define your own commands with parameters, and launching multiple programs with a single command.

Here are couple of screenshots – (I grabbed them from the Executor’s web-site, because I couldn’t figure out how to make the screenshots I like).

If you are like me to hate searching through program files and have your hands on the keyboard most of the time this is for you. I love the program – it starts with my windows.
