Manage multiple remote desktop connections

Two useful programs if you need to work with multiple remote desktop connections. Both have some overlapping features, but it is a matter of preference which one you’d use.

TerminalsTerminals is a remote desktop client program with a multi tabbed interface interface. Using multiple tabs it allows you to manage multiple connections at a time. It also allows you to store the connection properties, so the next time you connect it is enough to either type or choose your connection.

Edit (25 Oct 2007):  Terminals (1.6b Release) now supports the following protocols in addition to RDP – VNC, VMRC, RAS, Telnet, SSH, ICA Citrix. It is getting ahead of the other softwares…

Royal TSRoyal TS goes a little further with more features. It is using an explorer like interface. You can organize your terminal connections in categories and can have multiple category/connection sets. It can display the session information, including the username used for the session. Another useful feature is the ability to connect to the remote console session. Similarly to Terminals can store your username and password, so you don’t have to type them every time.

Even though both programs have many advantages over the remote desktop client included with windows I tend to favor more the Royal TS over Terminals. Both are definitely worth a try!

P.S. I looked at Royal TS 1.3.2 and Terminals 1.01

Update 7 Sept 2007: I have come across yet another terminal tabbed client – RD Tabs. Looks like it is worth a look.

Who is locking that file?

UnlockerFind out with Unlocker. Have you ever seen a message that a file is in use by another process and cannot be deleted? Unlocker integrates in explorer and appears on the context menu on a file or a folder. When selected it shows you a list of processes that have opened the file and gives you a choice to unlock the file (i.e. closing the file handle), killing the process(es) or just quit with no action. You can just see which program is locking the file (or a folder) and close it yourself.

Another interesting option it gives is to copy, rename or even delete the locked file, which is very useful if you need to look at a file, opened by some process (or deleting a spyware).

Power Pro

Power Pro Configuration WindowPower Pro is a compact launcher, supporting multiple positions and forms of the button bar. You can assign actions for each button for the different mouse clicks (i.e. launching a different programs with right and left click). Very flexible launching options to start programs, shortcuts, documents by assigning global shortcut keys, on timers, clicks, etc.

One feature I love is that right-clicking the minimize button sends the application to the system tray. Support for virtual desktop is an invaluable feature especially if you use a single monitor. The program is designed with one thing in mind – efficiency. It’s creator has succeeded to find the right balance between number of options, flexibility, power and ease of use.

It is a fine addition to any windows installation.

CCleaner (Crap Cleaner)

CCleanerCCleaner is a program to help you get rid of unnecessary files, leftover files and registry entries, resulting from install/uninstall, etc. It can also clean your browser history, cookies, temporary files, URL history.

It includes functionality to remove unnecessary registry entries like old file associations, AciveX controls, remove MRUs of various applications, Invalid shortcuts, and many more.

It is a small and fast program, that is well worth installing and using.

Rapid Environment Editor

Rapid Environment EditorEasily maintain and edit the environment variables on your computer with Rapid Environment Editor. It will help you edit and view the System and User environment variables as well as create new ones. It would even color in red the invalid paths in your Path variable, so you can remove/update them from/in your configuration.

In the Path you can also move the values up and down as well. Drag and drop is supported and you can backup the current set in case you need them later.

It is a very useful and convenient application.
